Let the sun shine: Boyd Specialty Sleep, which has headquarters in St. Louis, has installed solar panels on its 320,000-square-foot factory in Fontana, Calif.

St. Louis-based mattress maker Boyd Specialty Sleep expects its facilities in that city and in Fontana, Calif., to be completely self-sufficient when it comes to their electrical power needs by July 1.

The accomplishment is the result of more than two years of planning. The company has invested $2.75 million in solar-panel roof systems for its 70,000-square-foot Missouri facility and its 320,000-square-foot California factory. The bedding producer expects to save more than $100,000 in its own electricity costs in the first year and to sell back excess power to energy providers.

“For years, our mission as a business has been to focus on the health and safety of consumers and on the environmental impact of our products and processes,” President Denny Boyd said. “We see ourselves as an integral part of the communities in which we operate. As such, it’s our responsibility to be energy conscious and to give back to those communities, while at the same time doing what makes sense for our business.”

Boyd Specialty Sleep contracted with SunEdison to build, operate and maintain the systems on the company’s Fontana roof space. For its St. Louis facility, Boyd purchased the entire solar panel system, which will be installed by the end of June.
